I also reached out to the Gitea folks about #forgefed and getting federated sooner than later. They weren't opposed to the idea and a few were interested when I mentioned they themselves could probably apply for a β¬5k-50k grant. So they wanted me to type up an issue to begin concrete design discussions on their side.
I basically want the site to be spiffy before I submit one or more grant proposals to the NLNet folks. There's a lot of #ActivityPub and #golang related work to be done, and I can't do it alone. So I'm hoping to just pass on the grants (if fortunate enough to be selected) entirely to other folks who want to get involved.
@bill_auger It would also be beneficial if y'all checked into the https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/ every once in a while. For example, we are trying to set up a community FEP process for documenting the community's expansions to ActivityPub, which may or may not interest y'all, but would be nice to know you're in the loop. Plus we missed ForgeFed rep in #apconf2020. :(
@mayel Yes! Thanks! I have been having trouble connecting with @forgefed or @bill_auger or @fr33domlover recently though, to make sure work is coordinated. As some things are still missing from ForgeFed that are needed.
@bill_auger Thanks bill. go-fed (https://go-fed.org/) is v1 a golang lib ready for retrofit onto existing applications or for use in stand-alone applications. Furthermore, I'm currently working on apcore, which is a more hands-on framework for quickly standing up a Fediverse web app.
So I am looking to provide consult for someone else doing the gitea integration atm.
I've connected w/ Rob (enot on FENEAS) separately, nothing currently moving tho.
@mariusor Yep, if the major providers could provide 1-click counter-DMCA-as-a-service it would really devalue the existing ez-DMCA-filing process.
And completely defeat the point of the law (creating a non-litigous process), which I think is indicative of how fundamentally broken the law is. I've never heard anyone say "I'm so thankful that I get to file a counter-notice".
@happybeing This was played out in the early and mid 2000's with the music industry.
People used decentralization to circumvent the censorship. But what the beancounters saw was that it simply increased the legal cost of getting their way.
They simply allocated more capital to go after individual users and small businesses to kill the culture, and win.
So we as a community have to be realistic on what getting more people to use decentralized tech actually will and won't accomplish.
@happybeing I think your efforts are very important -- and I think you should connect with the ForgeFed folks. Y'all have a lot of overlapping thoughts in this space.
However, I think it is important to carefully manage expectations on what tech actually helps accomplish.
Migrating to alternatives will not stop companies using their capital and the legal system to attempt to grapeshot the community with DMCAs and/or litigation.
Last thing I have to say on this: cloning the yt-dl doesn't affect these bad actors in the industry. They frankly don't give a shit if you have the code. They aren't stupid, they know how git works. They want to send a message.
So if it makes you feel great, clone it. But don't deceive yourself into thinking it's "sticking it to the man" or "activism". That comes from hitting them where it really hurts: pushing for copyright reform.
Apparently I missed big drama on here around the RIAA abusing the DMCA system again. I hate the RIAA and the DMCA law but i also don't understand the sense of urgency in some folks' toots about this particular incident.
Don't forget to write to your congressperson, again.
Also, if you've ever wondered why Karaoke was hugely popular in America in the 90's and lost steam in the 2000's, it is because the music industry (Sony and Warner) sued everyone, including my father's business, so a great deal of the business's money went into pieces of paper in PACER. TL;DR They won and took everything business related and additionally considered going after my dad personally. No more new Karaoke music meant no more popular karaoke songs.
Hiked up to Dent de Valerette today. Our trail passed through Chindonne, which had an abnormal closure today. So there we could only snag pictures.
Got to the 2000m peak, turns out today is the 5 year anniversary of the rebuilding of the Refuge de Valerette so a whole bunch of folks were partying at the top with free Raclette and dinks/wine for everybody.
On the way down through Chindonne again, we found out why it was closed: a Swiss wedding.
@cwebber I appreciate the sincere answer and added it to my "to-read" pile but I also didn't intend for my playful joke to be so lame to not even get a chuckle. π
@absturztaube admittedly I don't know much about GNS. I think GNS uses DNS.
I would prefer avoiding DNS altogether, which also has its challenges as the last 30 years or so has seen more money, labor, and effort generally put into DNS and DNS dependent technologies.
Whew, and now that this is over, I wrote down on one side of an index card all the things I'd like to tackle, thinking that an index card would keep my list small.
Turns out I can still write small and I have 8 things I want to do.
I finally received the counter-signed copies in the mail: I have successfully renegotiated the IP portion of my contract. 1.5 years of work, lawyers, negotiation, meetings, concluded. Cleared up a lot of ambiguity.
Expect more #activitypub related developments in the near future.
