many years ago I learned relational databases with a thing called FileMaker

M$ Access is in the same league

A #Gnome based project aimed ot be equivaent and it was called Glom, it seems to be abandoned

Does anything similarexist in the #FLOSS world ?

Maybe anything made with #KDE stuff?

Want an example of where Fedora Silverblue 36 trumps the usability of macOS? See the gorgeous new screenshot feature (part of GNOME 42).

    1. What do you press to take a screenshot on a Mac? I keep forgetting the silly combination… On my machine, it’s the Print Screen button.

    2. The screenshot feature is entirely intuitive with no hidden functionality; it remembers your choices and lets you record stills or videos.

    😍

Isn’t it interesting how #Gnome’s statements and actions are pointing at 180 degrees opposite directions? Especially this quote from their code of conduct and their behaviour towards their users and other devs:

    > The GNOME community is dedicated to providing a positive experience for everyone

I drream a native #gnome framework made with a browser copied form the #smalltalk browser

    For browsing files hierarches

    But also email folders

toots (the articulation of categories in ths case could be invented)

    forums

    trees of todo tasks

    git trees

    databases

    whatever

things could be represented logically with vocabularies and triples and managed by a system wide service

And then the same browser could allow you to browse anything

    This time around I did #Xfce -> #GNOME -> #KDE/#Plasma.

Maybe I will rotate back to Xfce eventually. Since both GNOME and KDE/Plasma have their ugly.BTW, KDE is very aggressive. Basically after you switch to KDE, there is some cleanup to be done in $HOME regarding configs. Since all gtk related stuff is infested by Breeze etc. bacially your GNOME looks like some sort of frankenstein monster. Not cool KDE!

    Some observations.

    #GNOME

    - Looks beautifully clean- Font rendering somewhat ugly- One has to learn to let go some lack of functionality (whatever #GNOME Gods have in mind - be it)- Stability at the cost of functionality- Also for stability reasone I do not use extensions (kindof scary to run JS on desktop)

So, challenge to the #gnome #gtk #vala wizards out there: is this the best we can do to count Unicode glyphs in a string (equivalent of string.characters.count in Swift) or is there a more performant way I don’t know about?

(It’s fast enough for my needs but not ideal by any means.)

    1. How to count Unicode glyphs in Vala using Gtk
Want to try something really scary this Halloween? Try counting the characters in a string in Vala. For example, how many characters do you think there are in the following string? var zombie = "🧟♀️️"; One? You’re right! So how would you go about getting this result in Vala? Use zombie.length, did I hear you say? Oh, you poor, dear, naïve, sweet thing… "🧟♀️️".length // 13 What’s that? What about char_count ()?

Of course, I'm not going to disappear from the #GTK team or the #gnome community. I'm not locked in here with you: you're locked in here with me.

For now, I'm going to take a bit of a break. I have a home office to clean up; a bunch of games to play; and various Gundam plastic models to build…

I will finally have time to finish chapter 2 of the History of GNOME podcast.

Sadly, Friday was my last day at the #GNOME Foundation. I'm not going to shock anybody when I say that everyone loves free and open source software, except when it comes to funding work on it.
