If you don't like the "smart" side of a tv, you can just not connect it to the internetunless I'm missing on something

@solidsanek They connect themselves to the internet if they can. It's a pre-packaged appliance, not a general purpose machine on which you install the OS of your choice.

@lain @solidsanek Since it became public a few years ago that some smart TVs run image recognition analytics on the screen contents, I stopped trusting any kind of display devices that are directly connected to the internet. The argument «just don’t connect it to the internet» doesn’t really work these days either, since some newer models forcibly connect to nearby hotspots or unencrypted networks, with no way to turn that off.

@wakarimasen @lain I'm willing to believe that but I'm trying to find articles about TVs automatically connecting themselves to nearby hotspots and can't find any so far. All I've found so far is that these TVs can annoy you about accepting to connect themselves to available networks whenever possible though.I completely forgot about the first part tho, I admit

@solidsanek @lain If I remember correctly, it was Samsung TVs that made it impossible to disable WiFi (and thus prevent them from connecting to open networks). A quick search shows that it’s apparently still possible to do, but hidden in a service menu: https://eu.community.samsung.com/t5/tv/disable-wireless-amp-bluetooth/td-p/625115

@clacke @solidsanek that sounds like something that would be somewhere between questionable and illegal in the EU
