She
had eaten them, murdered them routinely, and yet he
loved her still. . ”
Chapter XXV
THE STEEL EDGE OF THE TRUTH
The manservant, with his plain black clothes and black tie, had entered the room
with a deferential little gesture. "Be silent," said Jonathan, in a menacing whisper. "Those
boys out there think this is some new religious rite and that you are skinning the
dog alive to eat him!"
The shock of this information loosened Spurlock's grip on the dog, who bolted
out of the kitchen and out of the house, maintaining his mile-a-minute gait until
he reached the jungle muck, where he proceeded to neutralize the poison with
which he had been lathered by rolling in the muck. "What?—help take care of him? Why, you can't do that, Miss
Enschede!" was the protest. "Surely," he added, staring at Rowland, "either
I'm greatly mistaken, or it is—"
"You are not mistaken, Baptist," returned Rowland with a gesture of silence; "it
is your old friend. She’s naïve, and
yet uncannily shrewd at times, and you daren’t rely on anything she says. "
"Write him," urged Spurlock, finding speech. Hastening along the passage he came to the sixth door. "What's to be done next?" cried Blueskin, returning to Rachel, who was standing
with Edgeworth Bess near the door. ”
He sat like a man turned to stone.
